1 Day Fly-in Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar
Overview
Discover the wild side of Tanzania on a 1 Day Fly-in Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar, an ideal adventure for travelers who want to combine the tropical beauty of Zanzibar with an authentic African wildlife experience.
While Zanzibar is famous for its white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and cultural attractions, many visitors also dream of experiencing Tanzania's incredible wildlife. A fly-in Mikumi safari makes this possible by allowing you to visit one of Tanzania's most accessible national parks in a single day.
Mikumi National Park is located in southern Tanzania and is known for its open plains, diverse wildlife, and excellent game viewing opportunities. The park provides a true safari experience where visitors can observe animals in their natural environment while enjoying the beauty of the African landscape.
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a transfer from your hotel in Zanzibar to the airport. After a short flight towards the Mikumi safari area, you will meet your professional safari guide and begin your journey into the national park.
Once inside Mikumi National Park, you will start your game drive across the famous Mkata Floodplain, one of the best areas for wildlife viewing. The open grasslands make it easier to spot animals as they move across the plains, creating excellent opportunities for photography and unforgettable safari moments.
During your game drive, you may encounter some of Tanzania's most iconic wildlife. Elephants can often be seen moving through the park, while giraffes feed among acacia trees and zebras and wildebeest travel across the open landscapes. Buffalo, hippos, warthogs, antelopes, and many bird species also call Mikumi home.
Mikumi is also known as a place where visitors have opportunities to see predators such as lions. While wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because animals move freely in their natural habitat, the park's environment provides excellent conditions for memorable encounters.
After exploring the park and enjoying your safari experience, you will return to the airstrip for your flight back to Zanzibar. You will arrive back on the island with incredible memories of experiencing Tanzania's wildlife in a single day.

1-Day Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar

Day Before — Prep & Confirmation
-
Pick-up confirmation: We confirm your hotel pick-up time for Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, or Kiwengwa.
-
Flight check-in needs: Passport/ID used for booking. Soft daypack only; we store bigger bags in Zanzibar free of charge.
-
Baggage guidance: Most domestic flights allow 15–23 kg combined (varies by airline/aircraft).
-
WhatsApp support: We share a live contact for any last-minute questions.
We collect you from Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani or Kiwengwa and assist at Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ). You’ll fly direct to Kikoboga Airstrip when available, or route briefly via Dar es Salaam (DAR) — whichever is fastest on your date.
On landing at Kikoboga, meet your professional driver-guide and enter the park through Kikoboga Gate. The morning focuses on open grasslands where herds gather — expect elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and regular raptor sightings, with a fair chance of lions on the Mkata Floodplain.
Pause for a shaded picnic lunch at the Hippo Pools, a classic Mikumi viewpoint with hippos surfacing, crocodiles basking and colorful birdlife. It’s a great time for photos and a short rest before the afternoon drive.
As temperatures rise, we explore baobab-dotted valleys and miombo woodlands. Look out for greater kudu, sable (seasonal), warthog families and tall giraffes framed by sculptural baobabs. Your guide uses slow loops and waterhole checks to maximize sightings.
Return to Kikoboga Airstrip for the afternoon flight back to Zanzibar (ZNZ) — sometimes via DAR depending on schedules. A private transfer returns you to your hotel in Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani or Kiwengwa the same evening.
Your day trip includes return flights, park fees, a private 4×4 pop-up-roof vehicle, a pro guide (English; German/French/Italian on request), hotel/airport transfers, lunch and bottled water. Bring a small daypack; we store larger bags in Zanzibar free of charge. Best months for visibility are June–October, though Mikumi delivers year-round.
